CBD for Running

CBD for runners: What you need to know
Many athletes, including runners of all abilities, are now taking CBD to help achieve their goals. But what is CBD and how does it help?

How does CBD work?

Our bodies produce natural cannabinoids that work within our endocannabinoid system (ECS) to maintain balance within many of the bodies systems, such as sleep, mood, stress, inflammation and pain.

By taking CBD we boost our endocannabinoids and enhance the activity of the ECS in controlling the body’s reactions to aspects of exercise such as distance running as it tries to help our body return to its ideal operation (homeostasis).

How could CBD help?

  • Reduce inflammation: Exercise and fatigue cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, particularly the muscles and joints. CBD has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, so may both reduce the amount of inflammation incurred if taken during, or assist in the reduction of inflammation when taken after exercise.
  • Pain & soreness: CBD is commonly used for its analgesic properties, so may reduce the pain and soreness frequently experienced after extended runs.
  • Sleep: Over-exertion and overtraining with insufficient recovery may often cause sleep disturbances and short-term sleep disorders. The ECS modulates sleep and the sleep–wake cycle so taking CBD may boost this and improve quality of sleep. (We are currently running a clinical trial in sleep to quantify this effect).
  • Mental performance: CBD has been shown to have anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) and neuroprotective properties. Boosting our ability to deal with stress and anxiety before, during or after a big event such as a marathon is a good thing!

Optimising recovery
Recovery has become a vital topic in sports research and significantly impacts performance. Commonly, fatigue related to physical exercise manifests itself as pain, weakness, inflammation, loss of functional mobility, decreased force generation, feeling of tiredness, and reduced concentration, among others. Taking CBD gives the body the best chance of a speedy recovery.

The best way to take CBD
CBD is now available in many different formats, including the common CBD oils, sprays and creams. Satipharm have embedded CBD in our patented Gelpell® microspheres along with targeted vitamins which are proven to support your body.
3.5x more effective than bottled CBD oils
Satipharm’s phase 1 clinical trial showed our Advanced CBD capsules are up to 3.5x more effective than taking bottled CBD oil. When swallowed, the majority of ‘standard’ CBD oil is metabolised by the liver before it can reach the body’s cells to have an effect. The trial showed that up to 3.5x more CBD reaches the body if taken in a Satipharm Advanced CBD capsule rather than in a bottled CBD oil or spray.
WHO and WADA
The World Health Organisation has stated that CBD has a good safety profile with no evidence of any public health-related problems associated with its use. CBD has also now been removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances.
Note: THC remains on WADA’s list. Each batch of Satipharm capsules is fully tested to ensure no THC is present in either the natural hemp extract or the finished product.
Quality
All Satipharm products are made with natural broad spectrum hemp extract and manufactured to pharmaceutical specifications, under GMP conditions. This ensures our customers receive the best quality products that comply with all legislation and labelling requirements.
